Are you overwhelmed by tiny toys scattered everywhere? Same here! While organizing and donating toys my kids don’t use, we needed a solution to tame the chaos. That’s when I discovered IKEA’s Trofast bins—affordable, practical, and perfect for organizing small items. Inspired, I decided to build a custom wooden frame to house these bins, as well as make a shelf for storing bigger items like games and things that don’t fit in the bind. Here’s how it turned out:

DIY Toy Storage Solution: A Practical and Stylish Build!
Here are the plans if you want to make the same one yourself!
Supplies You’ll Need:
- Wood: 3/4″ thick glued pine or whitewood boards 12″ and “13” wide
- Tools: Kreg Jig, drill, brad nailer (or drill & screws)
- Other Essentials: Wood Glue, wood stain, paint, IKEA Trofast bins

This whole storage system cost about $150 including the bins. This cost does not include the paint and stain which I had leftover from other projects. See my painted piano!

Let’s Build It!
Step 1. Prepare the Wood

Step 2. Drill Pocket Holes
Use a Kreg Jig to drill ¾” pocket holes for easy assembly.
Step 3. Attach Rails for Bins
Secure the rails to the side panels using wood glue and a brad nailer or in my case pre-drill and use screws.
Step 4. Assemble the Frame
Connect the top, bottom, and side panels with pocket hole screws. Add middle shelves spaced 16 5/8″ apart.
Step 5. Stain and Customize
Apply your favorite wood stain for a cohesive look. I used Varathane Stain in Walnut and Behr Ultra Scuff Resistant paint
